February In the Bee Friendly Garden – Pruning Dogwood and Clematis

This week, I decided to prune my dogwoods. To ensure that I have plants of manageable size and to make sure that I have some lovely coloured stems next winter, I have hard pruned my dogwoods. The new shoots that grow this season will turn a beautiful orange/yellow next winter. Here are the before and after photos. This is Cornus Sanguinea ‘Winter Beauty’.

As I was walking round my garden I found that my Clematis viticella ‘Etoile Violette’ was already shooting. This deciduous climbing shrub grows vigorously each year and it flowers on the current season’s growth, so each year I cut the plant back hard so that I have flowers at a height to cover the side of my swing-seat.
